If you've been playing and streaming on a gaming laptop bought in the last few years, then there's a big chance yours comes with both an integrated graphics card along with a discrete one from NVIDIA or AMD.

The main benefit of this is your laptop can use the integrated graphics for general use when you aren't running any heavy tasks like games or other graphics-intensive software like photo and video editing, saving you battery life and keeping the temps low during normal use.

However, due to the way some laptops are configured, it can happen that they don't always correctly use the right graphics card for the right applications, causing performance drops especially when running games and/or streaming software.

There are two big fixes we can recommend that should help correct this and make sure both your game and Gamecaster are always running off the dedicated GPU and giving you the best performance.

1. Connect an external monitor and use that as your primary display.

Most laptops are hardwired to use the dedicated GPU when connected to external display ports like HDMI, DisplayPort, or Thunderbolt, which guarantees that all your output will use your most powerful hardware. Check out this video to see this in action:

2. Run Gamecaster off the external monitor as well.

With the way we've coded the application, you will also gain a performance boost when running off an eternal monitor (and thus the dGPU). This small tweak should ensure you're running the best possible setup for streaming and recording.
